Arched Treatment Idea: Great Room

Here is an option for large arched windows in a Great Room. I've shown here the "before and after" photos. The client contacted designer Eva Keegan, after deciding to update her look. Eva's design utilizes short rods and long draperies with attached valances of a contrasting fabric, fringe along the bottom edge of the valances, lined and interlined. One problem that we could foresee is that air vents were located under two of the drapery panels. I used a couture European method of attaching the hems, seams and linings together so that when air blows from the vent, the draperies will not pouf apart.

Arched Window Ideas: Bedroom

There are many ways to treat arches. In this master bedroom, the arch became a problem. Even with the arched shutter and blinds, light was an issue for my client; he wanted to have the option of total room darkening. The designer, Lynn Sharp, chose a drapery treatment with blackout lining. The drapery rod is not only decorative, but has a hidden traversing system for easy function.

Grommet Curtains

Grommet curtains look great in any room. We used Antique Pewter iron hardware and grommets in this beautiful kitchen. Linen was a perfect choice for this nook!

Ripplefold Draperies

Ripplefold draperies are hard to explain until you see them in person or photography. They have no pleats at the top, but instead they hang in uniform rounded folds. Think of grommeted draperies, without the grommet or the rod going through the center of the curtain. These curtains are usually installed on a small track with ball bearing carriers for smooth-as-butter function. They look fabulous in a contemporary loft apartment or in homes with clean lines. A few of my favorite fabrics for Ripplefolds are linen, silk, velvet, and even sheers that have some "nub". Lastly, I have made these unlined, lined or even blackout lined for room darkening in bedrooms. I am not the best photographer. Pattern Matching Wallpaper to Fabric

Just an example of how I can match wallpaper patterns with the corresponding fabric. With this particular fabric, the selvage limited an EXACT, perfect match, but I was able to get close. The client was especially happy that the pattern was the same horizontally across the room. Small details make a big difference in a custom treatment.

New Pillow Detail: Open-Corner Flange

Here's an updated option for pillows: an open-cornered flange. The flange on this type of pillow is usually about 1" - 1.5" wide and the corners do not connect. I love this detail for Euro or rectangular shams on a bed, a throw pillow for the couch or as a different detail for a lumbar pillow in the back of a chair.

Cornice with Grommet Drapery Panels

DESIGN CHALLENGE: My clients wanted to let in as much light as possible, not obsuring the incredible view. We discussed the need to conceal the multiple linear lines going across the top of the window: moldings, wall, crown, even the eaves from the roof line were distracting. Light control is not an issue for this couple, so functioning draperies or shades were not desired.

STYLE: Clean, updated, stationary .. not fussy.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL: Grommeted silk draperies, lined and interlined attached to 170" cornice. Custom hand made hooks from KAL Metals in Franklin, TN.

pillow shams and

around the perimeter

of the twin duvets.

We added covered

buttons for duvet closures.

The gathered silk striped dust skirts and coordinating throw pillows finish the look for this cheerful guest bedroom.

Balloons are back

I've been fabricating more Balloon Shades lately. The photo shows a Balloon Shade, lined and interlined, in a creamy coral pink with fringe along the bottom edge. As formal as this one is in silk, it also has a simple elegance that I truly enjoy!

Who's that doggie in the window?

As my maiden blog, I thought I'd start by answering a question which I've been asked several times ... "Did you take that picture or is it from "ClipArt"?" On my website and in advertising, I use this photograph which I took at my client's, Lynne's, house. We had just installed the copper silk draperies (so beautiful, especially in person!) and Lynne's Ruby King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, named Lilly, sat down by the draperies and looked out of the window. This was truly a Kodak Moment; we both ran for our cameras!
